They can serve a useful function to account for changes in attitude and behavior, for example , but restraint is more effective, paradoxically.
In her better books, Balogh achieves a reasonable balance, in my opinion. Actually, I strongly suspect that agents and editors are largely to blame for the proliferation of such scenes, at the insistence of marketing departments, needless to say.
